Main contractor McLaren were instructed by joint developers Roxhill and Port of Tilbury to provide a mega-shed complex for Amazon at Tilbury. The complex includes a 22m high-bay warehouse with nearly 200,000 sqm of internal floor space and an adjacent 1,700 space multi-storey car park (MSCP) to cater for the staff of 3,900 shift workers. This substantial Precast order of nearly £10 million included; a total Precast frame solution for a 1,700 space MSCP; 49 Euro dock levellers with insulated wall panels for the warehouse; three separate five and six storey Precast access cores for the office building facilitating a total of eight lift carriages with a further six Precast access cores also provided within the MSCP; and 26 TY3 bridge beams for a vehicle access. Concast’s in-house designers worked closely with the client’s design team to bring efficiency, increased capacity and value engineering to the internal layout of the MSCP including repositioning access cores and internal ramps. Due to poor ground soil conditions a ground bearing slab would have required extensive pilling and so it proved more economical to include a suspended Precast hollowcore floor at grade within the MSCP. A one-way system, with double-width one-way ramps, was incorporated within the design to ensure shift works could safely enter and exit within a 45 minute period. This project further strengthens Concast’s valued working relationship with McLaren having successfully completed numerous large scale projects together across England including projects at Asda Rochdale, Asda Avonmounth and Magna Park Milton Keynes.
